I never learned how to fish. My father took me, once or twice, but I don't think we caught anything, and I gave up. When we write father, we usually mean "dad." My friend Leo's dad just died: his name was Jonas Zoninsein.

my dear friends, family, and colleagues,
some of you have been close to me in this time and know very well that
my father is dying.
some of you have been farther and may not have had much face with this
news, reality. my dad was diagnosed with fourth stage b
adeno-carcinoma last august upon return from brazil. we began intense
chemo-therapy and radiation which encouraged small hope for increasing
longevity- a regime which lasted a couple of months. he had some drive
then despite the dreadful effects from the toxic. my sister returned
from china, and we began working carefully together, my mother, my
sister and i to nourish and comfort my dad. about six weeks ago we
found the cancer had spread and chose to terminate treatment, thereby
inviting the maximum quality of life possible for what would be the
rest of his life. in the past week or so he and we have experienced a
steady and rapid decline in his coherence, his strength, and have
begun the vain and impossible 'preparation' for his passing away.
this is a truly sad time. a blessing in profound sadness by what has
been our co-existence and shared creation.
i am proud to write you of my father, jonas's, courage, endurance and dignity,
and of my mother's and sister's fortitude, tenderness and grace during
this this moment.
i regret to relay such vital and intense information through this
amassed and blunt format,
but i wanted those of you close to me and my family to know where we
have been standing.
and i want to thank you for embracing me in this most intimate moment,
and the ones that come.
your love and support are invaluable and i wish you each a life full
of celebration and health,
